Unwell Sick day rules (for people with Type 1 diabetes)

Illness will increase blood glucose levels  

1.    Never stop taking your insulin

2.    Dehydration is likely to occur during illness, particularly if blood glucose levels are high.

3.   It is very important to increase your fluid intake to prevent dehydration

4.   Test your blood glucose levels more frequently

5.   If they are high, increase your insulin dose

6.   You may need to increase your insulin on a daily basis

7.   If they are low you may need to reduce the insulin dose or maintain blood glucose levels by drinking sugary fluids

8.   If you are at all concerned you should seek further advice

9.   If your dose of insulin had increased, remember to decrease it once your illness has resolved and your blood glucose levels begin to return to normal.
