Diagnosis Newly Diagnosed

Type 1 Diabetes

If you have just been newly diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes, then you should expect to be referred to the Diabetes Centre at Queen Alexandra Hospital. The diabetes team there will provide you with specific information as well as offer you an 'introduction to Type 1 diabetes' education programme. This group 'self management' programme runs every few weeks and not only helps you learn more about the skills of living with this condition, but also allows you to meet others in the same position.

Type 2 Diabetes

Within the first three months from diagnosis of Type2 diabetes you should have:  

  1. Written information about your condition
  2. Referral to DESMOND.  For patients in South East Hampshire District - please follow this link for  specific information if you are newly diagnosed.
  3. Referral for Retinal Screening
  4. Be aware of your Targets
  5. Blood Pressure taken
  6. Foot assessment
  7. Urine Tests
  8. Cholesterol and Kidney Tests
  9. Opportunties to discuss your condition with a Health Care Professional
