Unwell Use of Glucagon

Glucagon is an injectable treatment given for the treatment of hypoglycaemia (‘hypo’ - low blood sugars) that is useful if the person involved is unable to treat themselves (eg if they have passed out).

Generally unless this is the case there are other simpler treatments for low blood sugar levels – if however there have been problems in the past with collapse secondary to hypo then a colleague of family member can administer glucagon to treat a patient with diabetes who is unconscious secondary to a hypo.

The use of glucagon should be discussed with a member of the healthcare team, and generally a short instruction session is organised for those individuals who might need to administer the injection. Inside the box containing the glucagon there are reminder instructions for its use and these can be accessed here
