Unwell Sick day rules (for people with Type 2 diabetes)

  1. Continue to take your usual treatments (unless previously instructed NOT to do so by your usual care team)

  2. Keep a close eye on what is happening to your sugar levels – if blood sugars rise above 1.5times your usual levels (or >15) you should take some corrective action

  3. Drink fluids (aim for 3 litres per day) even if you are not feeling like eating – water or clear fluids (such as squash) are easier to keep down if you feel sick, but have small amounts regularly rather than occasional large volumes

  4. If you are not able to eat solids it is entirely appropriate to try and get some energy into your system in the form of ‘sweet’ drinks (eg fruit juice diluted half and half with water – which contains ~10g of carbohydrate for every 200mls)

  5. If you are not able to take in fluids (or have been vomiting) for more than 12 hours you should seek medical help from your usual care team, or if out of hours the on-call community team or the Accident and Emergency Department
