High sugars
This section refers to high glucose levels occurring in the context of other illnesses.
If the only ‘illness symptoms’ are osmotic symptoms as a result of hyperglycaemia, these should be treated in line with general diabetes management strategies (described elsewhere depending on diabetes type and stage)
High sugars associated with an acute illness may either relate to the illness itself (generally through insulin resistance) or occasionally its treatment (eg inappropriate sugar-containing fluids or steroids etc) the origin is however unimportant compared to their control, which should generally be undertaken with insulin in the acute phases of an illness
