Diabetes complicates and increases the risk of other illnesses, but in addition illnesses affect the control of glucose levels
Ill patients require advice on monitoring, hypoglycaemic therapies and how to adjust them during illness based on their glucose levels
In this section the aim is to give information to the healthcare professional in order that they can support patients with diabetes to effectively manage their condition whilst unwell

- All patients with diabetes should be aware of a sickness plan (part of education plan)
- Different patients will need different plans
- All involve monitoring
- All involve fluid intake
- All should involve ‘Blood Glucose awareness’
- Those with poorer control, high risk or Past History of decompensation the plan should involve insulin
