Living with my Diabetes Diet and Impaired Glucose Tolerance (IGT)

You have been diagnosed with IMPAIRED GLUCOSE TOLERANCE (IGT). This means that the level of sugar (glucose) in your blood is higher than normal but not high enough for you to be diagnosed with diabetes.

If you have IGT and any one of the following, you could be at risk of developing diabetes in the future:·

Obesity

Family history of diabetes

Previous diabetes in pregnancy

High blood triglycerides (blood fat)

Making changes to your diet and lifestyle can reduce your risk of developing diabetes by 58%.

The dietary changes you need to consider are:-

1.      If you are overweight, try to lose some weight

2.      You may need to alter the type of carbohydrate foods you are eating to a variety that is more easily digested by the body

3.      Try not to use much sugar in drinks or eat too many sugary foods

The leaflet on the right will help you to manage the rise and fall in your blood sugar readings.  It is particularly helpful if you are pregnant and health care professionals have found some sugar in your urine.  (For more details of Diabetes and Pregnancy follow the link to the section on Pregnancy)
